The short answer is ‘on the beach’. The Kraken Cup has a leg-race format which means that you’ll likely know which island you’ll be aiming for each night and you’ll be able to meet up with other teams. For the odd night that you’ll not be camping we have more details below. Tents are a great way of keeping yourself from being a snack for the mosquitos while you nap but we are not telling you what to pack. A good number of the islands have coconut trees suitable for stringing up a hammock but make sure you can make something work if you happen upon a beach with only bushes.
For your planning purposes the anticipated nightly locations are listed below. Strange things do happen and it is possible that a weather day is called or for some reason the race is put on hold and teams are instructed to stay put for a period of time.
During pre-race training you will need to book accomodation for the nights of the 28th; 29th and 30th December. The training venue is Gerry's Bar which is neighbors to the Hilton. A great beach front spot is Smiles and a street back is another favourite is Casa Umoja. Hodi Hodi is further away but you get a preferable rate if you tell them your are a Krakeneer. On the 31st you will be camping on a beach.
The night of the 1st January we should be in Stone Town where you will need to find accomodation. There are loads of options ranging from hostels to swanky 5 star hotels.
The 2nd is another camping night and then on the 3rd you should be at Kipepeo. Here there is a campsite and various accommodation options at Kipepeo Beach Village. To book here, email info@kipepeovilla
The 3rd; 4th; 5th; 6th and 7th are all camping nights. On the 8th we intend to be crossing the finish line in Kilwa. Kilwa offers a range of accommodation from $10 for a bed and a net with holes in it to luxury lodges with white towels and ice cold beer. The Finish party will be at the Mwangaza Hideaway so check them out if you are intending on being carried to bed post party. Kimbilio Lodge is a great beach front option. Please bear in mind that Kilwa Star and Kilwa Dreams are quite a drive from the Mwangaza.
These are just ideas, it's really up to you where you stay.
