Every member of the team will be given a satellite tracking device. This is both for the entertainment of the wider universe, glued to their screens ogling the race updates and also for the Race Team to track and manage the race.
Every sailor has to keep this attached at all times while you're at sea and keep it charged. The SOS function can be used in an emergency and one of your trackers will be used for plotting your race progress to Race HQ and the rest of the world watching online.
Your tracker will be set to track every 10 minutes and must be kept charged during the race. We've got some advice on the kind of powerpack you'll need in 'What to Take.'
Race HQ will be tracking your progress and use your updates to position the Race Boats, watch for rule infringements, course deviations, unsafe behaviour, suspected incidents, SOS messages, etc.
They are also a 2 way satellite text messaging device, so we will use them to issue warnings, weather updates, race holds, or other important race information. This in no way nullifies your duty to keep yourself legal and safe.
You will be required to use the trackers to send a message to confirm start time and check-in on land, e.g. "setting sail" or "here for the night"
We'll show you how to use the trackers in pre-race training and you'll have a chance to play with them so you are familiar with their operation before you set forth into the unknown.
There is no guaranteed response time if the emergency beacon is activated and you remain responsible for your own safety in the event of an emergency. The Kraken Cup is an unsupported adventure. No medical assistance is available from the Race Crew or Event team and medical assistance must be arranged by you and your travel insurance providers.
For the world watching
Your trackers will pipe your location to the Live Tracking Map in real time. This will go live a day or so before the race and allow your friends, family and followers to watch your race progress in real-time. We'll also post race round ups and a daily leaderboard.
You can also post updates, photos etc into the same system.
