It's a compulsory, fully refundable deposit of £1000. The reason is that the rickshaws we use in Sri Lanka are hired from local rickshaw drivers - meaning you're literally driving around in someone else's livelihood. We're well aware that fair wear and tear on the Rickshaw Run can constitute quite a bit of punishment, but try to be as nice to your vehicle as possible.
Money is only taken out of this deposit if you have any damage or do something incredibly unfriendly like abandoning it without telling us and letting us know the arrangements for leaving it behind. If you do have to leave the vehicle en-route for some reason, then money from your deposit will be used to retrieve it, and your deposit return could be substantially delayed.
The deposit will be returned minus any deductions a few weeks after the adventure, once the team on the ground have given the 'shaws a once-over and okayed this with the vehicle's owner.
You'll be able to lodge the deposit via this link from the '3 month to go' mark. The deadline to pay your deposit will be a month before the launch.
